In the middle of September in 2012 Mr. Bausch, Principal of MS 126; Ron Boocock, Program Director of Chess in the Schools Program; and Phil Rosado MS 126 Chess Coordinator delivered an opening gambit for a chess program in their school. They initiated a schedule of five chess classes plus an after-school chess club. The students showed such ability a team was formed that began competing in January 2013, this is nearly a year sooner than most chess club programs start in competition.
Chess had become a mission for their students Javier Bernal, Ruben Vega, Rene Hererra, and Edgar DeJesus. Their motivation and determination to earn medals, trophies, a United States Chess Federation membership for tournament rating, and best of all to compete in the Nashville, Tennessee 2013 Chess Super Nationals V in April fueled their journey toward success in accomplishing their goals. They proved themselves by winning 8th place in the Unrated section at Nationals, and Ruben Vega captured 6th place in individual competition winning 7 out of 8 matches.
