St. Nicks collaborated with People’s Firehouse to insure that the 64 apartments would continue to stay affordable for low income elderly residents on March 24. This partnership brings renovation and upgrades to its residence building on Metropolitan and Bedford Aves. Upgrades include a roof replacement, elevator overhaul, new mechanical equipment, and apartment rehab consisting of: new bathroom and kitchen fixtures, new floor tiling, painting, etc.
The improvements will sustain a quality environment for residents.
The People’s Fire House was founded in 1977 when the City of new Your threatens to cut back fire service amidst broad cut backs in municipal services. The organization’s leadership went on to preserve abandoned buildings and build new housing such as Msgr Jarka Hall. Today the PFH is spearheading the renovation of the old firehouse as a community art space.
Del Teague, Chairperson of People’s Firehouse said, “We are happy to recapitalize the senior housing and bring upgrades to the property. Today with runaway real estate prices this building is so important to our elderly residents who have very few affordable housing options”
“Through refinancing we have ensured this building will be here for the next generation of seniors in our neighborhood” said Daniel Rivera, Executive Director of The Peoples Fire House.
