A Sensible Census of Neighborhood Mask Wearers

Updated 07.12.2020

To wear a mask or not to wear a mask that is the question. To some it is a question. There are those who think this inhibits freedoms or causes you to breath in your own exhaled CO2.  As to the former — well ugh, and the latter isn’t true as the particles of CO2 are smaller than the gaps in the weave of cloth (or you’d be blowing up a balloon on your face). As this debate rages on, I decided to do a casual and technically unscientific survey of North Brooklyn to see where the community leans in actual practice on this question.

By the way, if you wish to participate in the 2020 Census go to 2020Census.gov

Rules of this survey:

  1. People not counted
    • Those outside within the parameters of their home: to take out the trash, sit on their stoops, garden, etc.
    • Those just getting out of their car if going to a residence not far away
    • Those exempt from mask wearing (small children, etc.)
    • Those in stores, establishments, etc. where a mask is required
    • Those participating in an activity where masks can’t be worn (eating, drinking, etc.)
  2. A person wearing a mask around their neck but who pulls it up over their face when someone comes near is counted as “Proper Mask Wearers”

Observations:

  1. More than 50% the cyclists counted in this survey have worn masks properly
  2. More than 65% of the runners/joggers counted in this survey have not worn masks.
  3. More than 90% of shirtless male runners/joggers counted in this survey have not worn masks.
  4. As of 07.02.20 only 5 people who wore masks around their neck pulled them up to their faces when people came near

This survey will be ongoing and updated here.
