GrowNYC Plastic Bag Ban in effect
Although NYC’s ban on plastic bags went into effect on March 1, 2020 a couple of things came along to halt its enforcement until last October. One of those things was COVID-19, as early on it was thought protective of cashiers not to handle other people’s personal bags. The other thing was a law suit that was dismissed last August.
In April GrowNYC decided to launch its move to ban plastic bags with the #PlasticCleanse 30-day challenge. Although this challenge will end on April 30th, GrowNYC will continue to encourage the use of bringing shopping totes and reusable vegetable bags at their farmers markets. Their info table will have some for sale.
Some vendors are still allowed to use plastic bags as plastic bag use is still allowed for bulk containers, raw meat and seafood, unwrapped food, flowers or plants, and take-out. However some produce vendors have changed to paper bags; Mountain Sweet Berry Farm is now bagging their potatoes in these.
