The loss of Police Officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos occurred less than two miles away from the School Settlement. This tragedy brought the sacrifices police officers make to keep their community safe close to home to those even thousands of miles away.
Rick Martinez, Program Director of the School Settlement, was inspired by a campaign from the Department of Youth and Community Development that invited school programs to show the NYPD their sympathy and support by creating and delivering

condolence cards the week of January 5 to January 10. The channeling of creativity, concern, appreciation would hopefully brighten up a dark time.
The School Settlement kids, families, and staff were game to show the NYPD some love in this time of heartbreak. The kids colored the words and made handprints. All the kids and staff names were written in the fingers of the handprints. Once the posters were finished they were given to the 90th and 94th precincts where they were displayed as a happy reminder of community support.
