At the Cooper Park Community Center, on the night of March 4th, it was evident how art is not only a key part of a child’s learning experience but can also be something for the whole family. The collaboration between the Joan Mitchell Foundation and St. Nicks Alliance is the force behind this afterschool art program at Cooper Park Community Center. The family night began with dinner and then the focus turned to creating portraits. Three Artist-Teachers from the Joan Mitchell Foundation, Anne Polashenski, Carlos Mateu, Roberto Jamora, guided the families in drawing a pencil outline first and then explained how to do shading and other techniques to provide contour and dimension. In addition to the family fun, the night was a celebration of Cooper Park’s first time as a site offering art classes in collaboration with the Joan Mitchell Foundation.
