Top Hat Cleaners Returns!

I will begin by saying Top Hat Tailors and Cleaners on 592 Lorimer Street, never went away. Even after a car ran into their storefront, reportedly speeding and going the wrong way toward Metropolitan Avenue from Conselyea Street, near the MTA Lorimer Street construction site.  This happened several months ago.  After this crash, the building was boarded up and a vacate notice went up until the building could be deemed safe.

Immediately, Top Hat moved their operations to the garage next door to them on Conselyea Street.  Ever since then, I regularly passed by and saw customers were picking up or dropping off their laundry from the garage.  It was rare when I didn’t see a customer.  This business’ resilience and their customers’ loyalty was a regular inspiration.

On February 23, I noticed they had moved back into their official location.  A bright blue new awning and shiny glass windows welcome customers old and new.

  1. I’ve been going to Top Hat Cleaners since I was a kid in the late ’50s or early ’60s and lived on Lorimer & Jackson Streets. No matter the owners it is a neighborhood institution and I’m so glad that Michaela and her team are back. I drive in now from Middle Village and began going there when Mike “The Turk” worked there from the ’60s to the mid ’80s. Does anyone remember him?
