M5k, Open Garden, & Celebration of Friendship

The first weekend in June is busting out all over.
The DIME McCarren 5k (June 3, 9 .a.m.) will be starting and ending at Leonard and Bayard Streets and will run up to North 4th Street, then to Kent Avenue, then to Manhattan Avenue, and then back to where it started for the finish line. The runners hit the streets at 9 a.m. so traffic along the route may have some closures; the NYPD will open up the streets after the last runners so roughly under an hour. This year the run will bestow its Civic Awards to: the Leadership of the John Ericsson Middle School 126, the Jackson Street Block Association, and three leaders of Girl Scout Troop 2111. If you wish to run register at M5K.org , and if you are the spontaneous sort and want to register the day of the run, you can do so at Leonard Street by the Ericcson Playground.

Open Gardens NYC (June 3 and June 4 – rain or shine): This will be the 6th year NYC Parks GreenThumb Community Gardens has held Open Gardens, an event where hundreds of community gardens across the city open their gates to the public for a weekend of free activities and exploration.
There are several gardens participating on Saturday and Sunday in North Brooklyn, too many to list:

Peace Gorilla Celebration of Friendship and Community (June 4, 2 p.m.): Greenpoint artist and creator of Peace Gorilla, Noa Bornstein, invites the community to a celebration of friendship and community at Peace Gorilla’s current location: Newtown Barge Playground/Park on Commercial Street between Franklin and West Streets. There will be live music and refreshments in addition to the opportunity to see Peace Gorilla, which is scheduled to leave the park on August 14.
