Let’s Go to Giglio!

July 5–July 16, Havemeyer Street between N 5th and N 9th Streets

Havemeyer from North 5th to North 9th and the side streets will be filled with food, rides, games, and folks wanting to see the Giglio Tower dance!

It’s Christmas in July again. Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church’s (OLMC) annual Giglio Feast is about to launch!

It’s an Italian American tradition that began on the streets of Williamsburg in 1887. Neighbors past and present gather.  Families make lifelong memories.  The streets smell of sausage and peppers and cigars.  There is live entertainment and carnival games and rides.  And the pièce de résistance is a two-ton, eight-story tower that men hoist on their backs and dance up and down the street.  This is called the Giglio Lift and it happens twice once during a Sunday afternoon and later on the following Wednesday evening.

This annual feast is a major fundraiser for OLMC. By coming to the feast and having a good time, you are also doing a good deed.

Here is this year’s schedule: July 5 — Opening Night at 7 p.m., July 6 — Children’s Giglio and Family Night at 6 p.m.; July 8 – Questra ; July 9 — Giglio Sunday, dancing of the Giglio begins around 1 p.m.; July 11 — Children’s Giglio and Family Night at 6:30 p.m.; July 12 — Night Lift of Giglio at 7:30 p.m.; July 15 — Old Timer’s Lift at 4 p.m.; July 16 — Giglio Feast Day and last day of the feast.   The OLMC Giglio Feast runs everyday from July 5–16, most days it opens in the afternoon, weekends closer to noon.  For more info: www.olmcfeast.com
