John O. D’Arienzo, president of D’Arienzo Funeral Home in Brooklyn, was installed president of the New York State Funeral Director Association at the organization’s annual meeting held at the Saratoga Hilton in Saratoga Springs, NY.
D’Arienzo is a fourth-generation funeral director and proudly carries on the family tradition of serving the Brooklyn area with compassion and respect.
His great-grandfather owned a livery stable and had a team of horses and a coach for funerals. Though he was never licensed, he set the stage for future generations. John D’Arienzo’s grandmother, Carmela D’Arienzo, was one of the first licensed female undertakers in New York City. She and her husband started the Brooklyn funeral home in 1934. His father, John A. D’Arienzo, was the first in the family to become a licensed funeral director.
Peter and Andrew D’Arienzo, John O. D’Arienzo’s brothers, are also licensed funeral directors. Their deep roots in the community are a source of pride, as they grow side-by-side with the families they serve.
“Funeral service is simply in our DNA,” reflected D’Arienzo.
John is the treasurer of St. Nicks Alliance as well as parishioner of Divine Mercy parish in Williamsburg. He and his wife, Annette, live next door to the funeral home on Skillman Avenue and are proud human companions to Miss Maggie May, a four-year-old Biewer terrier.
“I thank the membership for their faith in my ability to honor the role as the president of the NYSFDA,” stated D’Arienzo. “From early on in my career through to this day, I strive to be the voice of funeral service for my generation. I challenge all our members to consider the idea and make that thought their own. Knowing that someone listened to my call is my goal and will result in a great future for the NYSFDA.”
In 1982 John graduated from American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service and became a licensed funeral director in 1983. He is a two-time past president of the Metropolitan Funeral Directors Association (MetFDA) and has served on the board of the New York State Funeral Directors Association (NYSFDA) in several capacities.
“The same way that I am available to families we serve and my community in Brooklyn, I am available to serve the association in its important public policy work that touches the life of individuals and families,” commented D’Arienzo. Founded in 1889, the New York State Funeral Directors Association, Inc. is the oldest state association of funeral directors in the U.S., representing more than 900-member firms and 3,300 licensed funeral directors in New York State.
