Apply to BKCB1 by February 19!

Do you want to be in the room where it happens? Do you want to help shape your neighborhood? Applications to join Brooklyn Community Board 1 is open.
To serve on a particular district’s community board, you must be a New York City resident who lives, works, or has a professional or other significant interest in that district and is over the age of sixteen (by April 1, 2024). A professional or significant interest is considered an employee of a city agency located in that district and serving its residents, a member of a board of directors of an organization in that district, a property or business owner, or a student attending school there.
Community board members are advocates for their community and play an advisory role in matters such as the NYC budget, zoning, and land use. The board can recommend the placement of municipal and commercial facilities in the neighborhood. Any application that would change zoning matters must be presented before the community board. Although community boards cannot command city agencies or officials, they can influence decisions.
Williamsburg and Greenpoint are served by Brooklyn Community Board 1 (BK CB1). The boundaries are the East River, Newton Creek, and Kent and Flushing Avenue.
According to the Statements of Community District Needs and Community Board Budget Requests for Fiscal Year 2025, the 2020 Census states the total population in BK CB1 is 204,125. The top concerns for the district are affordable housing, infrastructure resiliency, and parks and open space.
The community board said, “We support the effort to fund affordable development and implement programs to meet the many needs of our residents. We urge that sufficient funding be provided for the Department of Parks and Recreation to meet these needs for more green and open spaces. Our streets are congested with traffic, causing excessive wear and tear on the roadways. Additionally, our public transportation system requires upgrades.”
In 2024, the BK CB1 will hold a combined Public Hearing and Board Meeting each month, with the exception of July and August, unless needed. View dates here: https://www.nyc.gov/site/brooklyncb1/calendar/calendar.page?1,2024.
Brooklyn Borough President Anotnio Reynoso will decide community board members. Applications are due on February 19, 2024. Apply here: https://form.jotform.com/232983867919175.
