Renovations for peaceful places and inspired learning

Brooklyn Arbor students in the newly renovated yoga room engage in ice breakers and games during theatre with Anvita (teaching artist) and group leaders Aaron Cruz and Katelyn Alvarez.

Students in seven area schools are enjoying newly renovated multimedia or STEM labs, sensory and yoga rooms, teen lounge, youth employment center, and soon a café that has yet to be finished.  St. Nicks Alliance applied for the NYS Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) grants, which can be applied to such improvements.  Each school’s principal and leadership team were included in the decision making process.

Brooklyn Arbor’s newly finished yoga room awaits students!

P.S. 18, P.S. 84, P.S. 250, Brooklyn Arbor, M.S. 577, Unity Prep, and the Career GPS center at Grand Street Campus are the schools that benefitted from these grants.  The implementation of the improvements began in 2023, with P.S. 250’s yoga and sensory rooms reaching completion first.  They held a ribbon cutting celebration on June 2, 2023.  The work on Brooklyn Arbor’s yoga/sensory rooms finished in January 2024, but there is still work to be done on their café space.

“Our city and schools can be busy places. Our school community couldn’t be happier that our students will soon be using these beautiful, custom spaces — where they can slow down, stretch, decompress, practice mindfulness and replenish,” said Principal Eva Irizarry of Brooklyn Arbor.
