Friends of Cooper Park Celebrate Earth Day

The cherry blossoms around the neighborhood are in peak bloom at the moment. A perfect inspiration from nature, overtly showing us what beauty it can do with a little help from us.
There will be more cherry blossom beauty to look forward to in future springs thanks to the Friends of Cooper Park and area neighbors. On the Saturday before Earth Day they all got their hands dirty to give seven cherry trees a new home and life.

According to William Vega (Friends of Cooper Park, board member of Brooklyn Community Board 1 and St. Nicks Alliance). These trees are famous or infamous trees as they were rescued from the Yoko Ono exhibit Ex It at Faurschou (148 Green St, Brooklyn). This exhibit opened last year but had to close early due to the death of four trees, an article in Art World reported, which also mentioned that some trees were donated to a local artist for a landscape project and the remainder were to be planted at Under the K Bridge Park. The photo of the exhibit shows a mixture of evergreen trees and Yoshino cherry trees planted in wooden coffins, although the article identifies the cherry trees as dogwood trees.
Two weeks prior to the planting the Friends of Cooper Park cleared the space where the trees were to be planted. Neighbors from Jackson Street, Maspeth Avenue, Sharon Street, and volunteers from AmeriCorps helped the Friends of Cooper Park to plant the trees on April 20.
