Observing that policy and legislative challenges may pose an existential threat to providing community services, St. Nicks Alliance invited city, state, and federal elected officials who represent the communities this organization serves to breakfast.  In addition to eating the most important meal of the day, over fifteen key legislative and policy issues organized into six topics would be discussed in the hope to exchange information and ideas, and for the organization to receive input from the officials on how to strengthen their overall advocacy.

St. Nicks Alliance hosted elected officials to a brainstorming breakfast to problem solve issues that impact community services. Among those pictured are (l to r) NYC Council Member Jennifer Guttiérez, May Vutrapongvatana (representing NYC Council Member Chi Ossé), NYC Council Member Lincoln Restler, and Ed Brittenham (St. Nicks Alliance board)

The six topics presented on were: affordable housing, education, elder care, worker’s wages, supportive housing, and workforce development.  Specifics discussed in these categories were; the struggle for home care workers and unionized child care workers to receive fairer salaries; obstacles holding up the application and approval processes for tenant housing subsidies; and scatter-site supportive housing services are funded at less than half of the rate of congregate supportive housing.
