STEM Program – Hydroponic/Outdoor Learning Garden and LEGO Engineering
First Polish-English Dual Language Program
Art and Music Programming for Pre-K through Grade 5
Housed in a landmark building in the heart of Greenpoint, P.S. 34 continues to grow, inspire, and challenge our students to achieve success in an environment that allows students to explore a multitude of programs, enrichments, and initiatives.
For school year 2024-2025, we are proud to host a rich enrichment and cluster programming available to all our students Pre-K through fifth grade.
Every student at P.S. 34 participates in our school-wide enrichment and cluster programs that include dedicated full-time teachers: art with Ms. Emily Lawrence, music with Mr. Vlesmans, STEM with Ms. Crawford, and physical education with Mr. Granito. We are especially excited that our Pre-K is included in this exciting school-wide programming. In addition, through PTA-funded grants, we have partnerships with Eckford Street Studios, Marquis Dance, Dancing Classrooms Ballroom, and Chess in Schools. Furthermore, our PTA funds after-school enrichment programs including debate team (Grades 3–5), Disney theater (Grades 4–5), and social-emotional club with our very own social worker Michelle Garavaglia. In addition, a group of P.S. 34 teachers has a volunteer running club “Girls on the Run” to promote physical and mental wellbeing.
The P.S. 34 PTA, school leadership, and staff, have organized efforts in the last several years to revitalize the McGuinness School Yard into a community learning garden. Through volunteering and grants the transformation of this learning garden has become a bounty of native plants and edible foods. We grow figs, grapes, tomatoes, corn, bean, squash, watermelon, and a variety of herbs to enhance our students’ education around conservation and habitat renewal.
As a member of Eco-School, students from kindergarten to fifth grade participate in our Eco-STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) program. In this program, students learn problem-solving and critical thinking as they study and explore the environment in our school, community, and planet. Our STEM lab provides hands-on learning through our hydroponic system and technology with our state of the art mobile STEM carts equipped with iPad and science tools for research.
As the first Polish-English dual language program in New York City, we are proud to share that this program develops bilingualism in English and Polish as well as an understanding of the Polish culture. Non-Polish speaking students are also eligible to apply.
Parents are always welcome and encouraged to participate in their child’s education at P.S. 34. They can be involved in many different ways such as through our strong PTA and various committees, school volunteers, various workshops, Leadership Day, Family Nights to the circus and shows, baseball games, and Parents Read to Class days.
At P.S. 34 students achieve intellectual and personal excellence at his or her maximum potential in an engaging, inspiring, and challenging learning environment that will prepare them to excel in our school, community and beyond.

Marcus Garvey Magnet School of Engineering and Design

Principal: Latisha Cotton

Central to P.S. 44’s mission is the belief that building positive, sustaining relationships is essential to fostering students’ academic, personal, and social emotional growth and wellbeing. Who students are and become, how they treat each other, and how they show up in our community is crucial to their development and academic achievement. P.S. 44 offers students in grades 3K through 5th grade enriching opportunities for project-based learning, collaboration, experimentation, and dynamic, culturally responsive teaching and learning. Our dedicated staff, parents, and community members hope to inspire our students’ natural enthusiasm, curiosity, and creativity so they may be empowered to become lifelong learners prepared to build a brighter future together.
Our framework BUILD emphasizes a holistic approach to education and growth, focusing not only on academic achievement but also on social and emotional development. By creating an environment where everyone feels they belong, understands their role, acts with integrity, exhibits leadership, and dares to dream, you’re setting the stage for students and staff to thrive together:
Belonging: Building a sense of inclusion where everyone feels they are part of something larger, valued for who they are.
Understanding: Creating an environment where people listen to each other and seek to understand different perspectives.
Integrity: Building trust through honesty and strong moral principles, which lays the foundation for a positive and ethical school community.
Leadership: Cultivating the ability to guide, inspire, and empower others, helping to build a community that moves forward together.
Dream: Daring to dream by encouraging innovation, creativity, and bold ideas, which are essential in building something meaningful and transformative.
Magnet Program
The Marcus Garvey Magnet program offers an engineering and design curriculum rooted in the B.U.I.L.D. framework (Belong, Understand, Integrity, Leadership, and Dream) to develop students as real-world problem solvers. The program emphasizes belonging by teaching students that they are integral to their school, home, and broader communities. Through hands-on, real-world learning experiences, students come to understand how they can contribute to improving these communities.
Integrity is fostered by encouraging students to make responsible choices in both academic and social contexts. Leadership is developed through student-led, project-based activities where students guide the engineering process—identifying real-world problems and devising potential solutions. Students brainstorm multiple design ideas to determine viable solutions, and then work on building, creating, or improving objects, processes, or experiences based on their designs. These engineering tasks allow students to dream of new possibilities and envision a better future.
Our program integrates engineering principles into core subjects and all school activities, emphasizing project-based learning to enhance critical thinking and communication skills.
