In the weeks before Thanksgiving, the holiday spirit of giving starts showing out in force with community turkey and food drives.
Cooper Park Houses and Williamsburg Houses distributed turkeys and thanksgiving fixings to their residents in need.
On November 20, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez hosted a Thanksgiving food distribution at Maria Hernandez Park where more than 300 community members received a free turkey, produce, and other dry goods. “This was an effort to help families in need get a healthy meal for the holidays. This event was made possible in partnership with local community based organizations and contributions from local businesses,” said Gonzalez’s office.

North Brooklyn Angels distributed 1,000 frozen turkeys to local families in need, prepared and distributed over 1,000 holiday meals, and “transformed four North Brooklyn locations into safe spaces to serve almost 600 sit-down Thanksgiving meals to our neighbors, with a pickup option for freshly packaged meals.” They also hope to inspire the giving spirit in other and are accepting donations via Paypal (https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=TSH2YADGALGF6 ), Venmo (northbrooklynangels) and Zelle (fundraising@northbrooklynangels.org).

St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Academy organized a food drive to help fill North Brooklyn Angels’ food pantry. Among the items they provided were canned fruits and vegetables, boxes of mashed potatoes and stuffing, packaged baked goods, coffee and tea. Also St. Stan’s families donated turkeys, which were brought to another local food pantry at Trinity Human Services.

Cross County Savings Bank held their first annual turkey drive, in partnership with Divine Mercy Parish. They donated 65 turkeys to the parish on November 26, which were distributed the same day from the gym at St. Francis of Paola Church.
This is just a hint of the generosity that was occurring the past few weeks in our community.
