The loss of Crest Hardware is still felt by the community. Folks are looking for a brick-and-mortar replacement, but as Crest served so many types of customers there isn’t an exact replacement. You’ll need a garden store, a hardware store, a paint store, and gift shop. The loss of this store is particularly hard during the holidays as they sold Christmas trees, decorations, and you could always get a thoughtful gift there.
In mid-December it was revealed that the building (and neighboring buildings), which held this heart of the neighborhood, was purchased by real estate firm Green Street for $22M. Metropolitan Avenue addresses 536, 546, 554, and 558 will become an 11-story tower with 75 apartments, possibly more if the developer follows the City of Yes affordable housing guidelines.
Meanwhile, Crest hasn’t completely left the neighborhood. They held a couple of Crest-mas pop-ups at Union Pool. Crest merchandise in the form of hats, beanies, shirts, sweatshirts, and art were available for purchase.
