Black History Month was celebrated with community performances and tributes to those who shaped the past and continue to influence the future. It was held on the evening of February 20 in the auditorium of P.S. 250 and was hosted by U.S. Representative Nydia Velázquez, NYS Senator Julia Salazar, NYS Assembly Members Maritza Davila and Stefani Zinerman, Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, NYC Council Member Jennifer Gutiérrez, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, Southside United HDFC–Los Sures, El Puente, and NYC Health + Hospitals Woodhull.
Barbara Williams, the community advisory board chairperson for NYC Health + Hospitals Woodhull, served as emcee.

but was invited to give an opening prayer.

The festivities were opened up with prayers by Bishop Dr. Michael Clarke and artist Dr. Lorenzo Pace. Then Theda Clay led all to lift every voice and sing the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing”.

Those honored by local elected officials were: Elvena Davis, president of the 83rd Precinct Community Council; Aaron Jones, co-founder of Williamsburg Basketball League; Isis Smith, youth case manager at Southside United HDFC–Los Sures; Cordel Blair, principal of Williamsburg High School of Art and Technology; Barry Cooper, executive director of B.R.O. Experience; and Jonnel Dorris, CEO of Start Treatment and Recovery.
