Small Art = Big Hearts

Artists create postcards to support local seniors: visit the exhibit on June 4

During the golden years, having a place to go to exercise mind and body, socialize, eat delicious meals, and receive information and social services is priceless. City, state, and federal budgets are always pinching pennies — in these times even more so.  In order to provide life-enhancing extras to older adults, finding creative ways to fundraise is essential.

Artist Lisa Gutting, a member of St. Nicks Alliance’s board who leads its fundraising committee along with fellow board and staff members, recalled an annual postcard art fundraiser St. Nicks Alliance had held annually for three years beginning in 2011 that would be great to revive. The fundraiser was called Postcards to North Brooklyn, but the 2025 version is inclusive of all of the borough.

Gutting noted, “We set out to revive the postcards show this year in recognition of St. Nicks Alliance’s 50th anniversary and to highlight arts and culture as essential to thriving communities. This is a small step in what we hope will be once again an annual celebration!”

She put out a call to her fellow artists to create 4” x 6” postcards inspired by Brooklyn. In addition, seniors from Swinging Sixties Older Adult Center and youth from St. Nicks Alliance’s afterschool centers will also contribute artwork.

On June 4, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 211 Ainslie Street, Postcards to Brooklyn 2025: Exhibition and Reception will feature over 50 postcards displayed on the walls of Swinging Sixties OAC.  Here is the fundraiser part: these postcards can be purchased for $50 each or three for $100.  The proceeds will go to fund senior cultural activities like art classes.

Art might be subjective, but judging from the previous incarnations of Postcards to Brooklyn, there will be frame-worthy pieces that add grace to one’s living space.

Postcards to Brooklyn 2025 Exhibition and Reception is on Wednesday, June 4 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 211 Ainslie Street.  For information email: arts@stnicksalliance.org
