District 34 Launches Participatory Budgeting Cycle 15

If you are in NYC Council District 34, it’s time to put your thinking cap on as to how to spend $1M of District 34’s budget for capital projects. The idea map for the NYC Council’s Participatory Budgeting (PBNYC) Cycle 15 is open for business https://rnd.council.nyc.gov/ideamap/map/ and is currently collecting ideas through November 28.
PBNYC funds physical infrastructure projects that benefit the public. They must cost between $50K and $1M, and the project once implemented would have to last at least 5 years. Examples of eligible projects are: improvements to schools, parks, libraries, streets, and other public spaces.
Winning projects from past years have been: auditorium air conditioning for school gyms, library technology upgrades, tree guards for a designated area, building upgrades for an NYPD precinct, school restroom renovations, NYPD security cameras for a designated area, public playground renovations, park repairs, school STEM/hydroponic labs, etc.
Anyone can submit an idea on the idea map. Click the blue “Submit My Idea” button and fill out the form. Currently, District 34 has only dark blue and light blue idea dots. Dark blue signifies projects for public parks and light blue signifies projects for schools. When you click on a dot, you can see what the project is.
Once the Idea Map has stopped accepting ideas, then it’s proposal development time. This takes place from December through February. Early on in this process, ideas are transformed into tangible proposals with support from City agencies and staff. Then budget delegates choose the ideas that will best benefit the community to go on the ballot.
