Saucy Fun-draiser for Seniors

In the midst of a passata sauce marathon for the Swinging Sixties Older Adult Center. Pictured (l to r) representing St. Nicks Alliance: Danny Calderon and  Melanie Martin. Frank Citera hosted the event at his garage, he is the vice pres. of  Conselyea Street Block Association.

The Sunday sauce on September 21 was made with a lot of love for a good cause.  The Conselyea Street Block Association and community volunteers rolled up their sleeves and cut, diced, and milled 350 pounds of tomatoes to make a traditional passata-style sauce, which they sold by pre-order by the pint.  The proceeds went to fund the Swinging Sixties Older Adult Center.

Volunteer passata makers arrived at 9:30 a.m. and the sauce was finished at 3:45 p.m.

Saranii Muller (board member of Conselyea Street Block Association) strains the tomato puree, an important step in making passata.

Passata is an uncooked tomato purée that has been strained of seeds and skins. It can be heated and used in any dishes that use the pre-cooked versions of tomato sauce. It characteristically has a fresher tomato flavor.

Enjoying a passata feast.

In addition to picking up their passata, some stayed for an Italian feast starring passata.
Special thanks goes to The Meat Hook, which helped support this Passata Day!
