On December 18, the NYC Council gave the gift of passing legislation that will make many lives better. Some of the legislation that passed is sponsored by our area NYC Council Members Lincoln Restler and Jennifer Gutiérrez, Sandy Nurse, and Chi Ossé.

Housing and delivery workers have more protections. Int 0910-2024  requires housing developers of City funded projects to pay their workers a minimum combined wage and essential benefits package of at least $40 per hour with no less than $25 of that package being wages. This bill also has incentives to hire from within the community where the development is.  Int 1332-2025 protects app-based delivery workers from being let go unless there is documented just cause.

Potential street vendors will be dancing with joy after the passage of Int 0431-2024 which increases the number of vendor licenses and also establishes rules and enforcement. Int 0408-2024, creates a Division of Street Vendor Assistance within the Department of Small Business Services to assist street vendors.

If you are still sweltering in summertime, Restler is the lead sponsor of Int 0994-2024 that will require by June 1, 2030 owners of tenant-occupied buildings provide cooling systems capable of maintaining 78 F in rooms in which tenants sleep, upon the request of the tenant.
