1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. National Police Week this year marked its start in NYC on Friday May 8th when the Empire State Building was lit up in blue and purple in honor of Police Memorial Day. The following day in McCarren Park North Brooklyn’s NYPD celebrated with a Family Fun Day. There was a type of fun for everyone. For the athletic: a climbing wall; for the intellectual strategists: chess and board games; for the aesthetic: face painting and drawing with chalk; for the hungry: burgers, hot dogs, popcorn, etc. In addition to the fun some police assistance was offered in the form of registration of electronic devices and bicycles. It was estimated that 200 people came by to take part.
