2015 is the year of the FDNY. Well that is because it is the 150th year of the FDNY. Back on December 16th Mayor de Blasio announced with Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro that 2015 would be a year chockfull of celebrating the FDNY.
On May 2nd the FDNY held a citywide Open House of selected firehouses and EMS stations. Snacks, toy fire hats, and coloring books were among the offerings at Engine 216/Ladder 108 on 187 Union Avenue. EMS Station #35 Greenpoint at 332 Metropolitan Avenue had a basket of muffins and sandwiches. They also offered informative literature for the career minded and posted about their upcoming blood drive on May 22nd. A similar presentation of career information was handy at Engine 221/Ladder 104 (161 South 2nd Street). Visitors were encouraged to ask questions and checkout the vehicles from the inside allowing all ages to make a little more tangible any dream they’ve had about growing up to be a fireman.
