Get in at the Start of Participatory Budgeting 2017

PB start 2017 001Do you want to make a difference in our community? Do you have ideas that could turn into projects for the next round of Participatory Budgeting?

What is Participatory Budgeting?

Through Participatory Budgeting community members have an opportunity to brainstorm, shape, and vote on capital projects in their district. The projects receiving the most votes will split $1M in capital funds in order to make the projects a reality.

North Brooklyn’s Districts 33 & 34 have begun their outreach to get the ball rolling on planning the next round of projects that will be up for a vote in the spring of 2017.

District 33

Benjamin Solotaire, the Participatory Budgeting Coordinator for District 33 offers these options:

  1. Join the District Committee. This group helps plan the process for the entire district. They organize the idea gathering phase, extend outreach to everyone so they know how to be involved, and keep the process on track.
  2. Three Neighborhood Assemblies will be organized to gather ideas. Or, if you wish to organize a meet-up on Participatory Budgeting, contact Benjamin Solotaire at bsolotaire@council.nyc.gov and representatives from Council Member Stephen Levin’s office will come and speak on PB and ways to be involved.
  3. Become a budget delegate! In a month or two the ideas that have been collected will go into the development phase so they can become actual projects. This will entail working with City Agencies and Council Member Levin’s office. You will develop the final project for the ballot in March.
  4. If you’d like to be involved from a city-wide perspective you can apply to join the City-Wide Steering Committee or one of its five working groups, Equity & Inclusion, Advocacy & Expansion, Technology, Research, and District Support.

If you have any questions about the above or would like to volunteer, contact Benjamin Solotaire at bsolotaire@council.nyc.gov
