Letter to the Editor: Visions of riding the BQX

Letter to the editor

As a resident of Greenpoint for 3 years, I struggle with my commute on the G which will only get more crowded and less reliable with the L-train shutdown in 2019. The negative impact it will have on the lives of hundreds of thousands of commuters highlights the troubling scarcity of transit options in North Brooklyn, particularly for those traveling along the waterfront.

North Brooklyn needs more transit options — and we need them soon.

That’s why I was so excited to hear about The Brooklyn Queens Connector, or BQX, a streetcar that will reliably move riders like me along the Brooklyn Queens waterfront without having to make multiple transfers. The BQX will let me make comfortable trips down to Industry City or up to Astoria. Maybe it will even convince my friends to come visit me!

While the BQX won’t be built in time to ease the consequences of the L-Train shutdown, I think it is a vital step in planning for the future of public transit in Brooklyn and should be a priority for local elected officials to invest in efficient and innovative transit options like the BQX. I hope to be riding the BQX soon.
