By Mo Willems
(for readers in grades Preschool – Kindergarten)

Favored children’s author, Mo Willems (multi-award winner for his Pigeon series, Knuffle Bunny, and Elephant & Piggie series) strikes again with the quirky, yet personable Pigeon. As we leave summer behind and settle into the new school year, The Pigeon HAS to Go to School! is just the read for your children who still want to sleep in and play instead of waking up early to learn. The first Pigeon book, Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! came out sixteen years ago, and this is the first time the Pigeon has had to go to school.

bk_story_voyager_front_v2-standardFor Pigeon’s latest adventure, Mo Willems addresses uncertainty and transition: what happens next? For the Pigeon, it’s school. What if he learns toooo much? What if he doesn’t like it? The Pigeon has many questions that will answer and address your child’s questions and concerns. Willems uses the highly comical Pigeon to address his own personal fears and desires. The Pigeon’s cartoon-like illustrations are simple and easy for children to replicate. Better watch out, there may be crayon Pigeons drawn flying around everywhere you look! The text is uncomplicated, but Willems plays around with punctuation; putting some words in all CAPS, prompting exclamations from the reader; while other words are bold, emphasizing their importance.

As this is the Back to School issue of the Greenline, The Pigeon HAS to Go to School! is a perfect pick to keep reading fun and relevant. The Pigeon HAS to Go to School! will surely become a favorite in your home.
