Sofia Valdez, Future Prez
By Andrea Beaty
(For readers in Kindergarten – 2nd Grade)
Sofia Valdez, a second-grader who lives in Blue River Creek, is an active member of her community. She gives back by visiting elderly members, raking leaves, walking pets, etc. One day during Sofia’s walk home from school with her abuelo, they come across “Mount Trashmore,” a giant landfill that is polluting Blue River Creek. Sofia brings her concerns to her neighbors, and they all agree to turn the landfill into a park. Even so, Sofia soon realizes she has to be the one to lead the fight to get the park built.
Writer, Andrea Beaty, is well known for her stories: Rosie Revere, Engineer, Ada Twist, Scientist, and Iggy Peck, Architect. Beaty refers to these characters as “The Questioneers” and hopes they elicit “a celebration of STEM, perseverance, and passion” in their readers. Sofia exemplifies her Questioneer roots in the struggle to make her local community a better place. Beaty portrays a strong-child character who is asking big questions about the world. David Roberts has illustrated all of Beaty’s novels and his cheerful round cheeks and colorful cutout style adds popout dimensions to the characters of the stories.
Sofia, Future Prez will inspire your child to make a change in the world! It is perfect for the young reader who is asking questions about how things work.
