Dance on a Roof Meadow!

5th Annual Kingsland Wildflowers Festival July 31, 2021 4 p.m.–9 p.m.

If you’ve ever visited Kingsland Wildflowers (520 Kingsland Avenue) it’s very easy to become a fan of this unique space in Greenpoint.  A series of rooftops in industrial Greenpoint have been converted to fields of native grasses and wildflowers that are also a support to birds and insects.  When you’re not focused on nature, you’ll catch bonus views of the Manhattan skyline and the digestor eggs of the Newtown Creek Waste Water Treatment Plant.  The idea was the 2015 brainchild of Marni Majorelle, owner and founder of Alive Structures green roofing company.  The first phase of the project welcomed visitors in October 2016.

On July 31from 4 p.m.–9 p.m. Kingsland Wildflowers will welcome the community to enjoy the current blooms and free programing to celebrate its 5th Annual Kingsland Wildflowers Festival.  Featured activities are: dance and musical performances curated by NoOSPHERE Arts, native plant sale and Kingsland Wildflowers harvested seed giveaway, guided green rooftop tours with Alive Structures and Newtown Creek Alliance, creekside marine ecology activities, family-friendly and educational activities, and more!

There are other opportunities to visit Kingsland Wildflowers.  Think the third Saturday of the month if you’d like exercise your green thumb and get hands on information on what makes green roofs work.  On August 21 and September 18 you can participate in Green Roof Care with Newtown Creek Alliance from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

On September 25th, Kingsland Wildflowers will offer an ethereal way to empathize with butterflies.  NoOSPHERE Arts will present WE ARE NATURE: Insectageddon, ‘A Monarch’s Journey, an immersive site-specific dance & music performance among the wildflowers on the Kingsland Wildflowers roof that is inspired by the migration of Monarchs.  There are two sessions of this performance: 3 p.m.–4 p.m. (Kingsland Wildflowers Rooftop to Paige Avenue) and then 5 p.m.–6 p.m. (Paige Avenue to Kingsland Wildflowers Rooftop). This performance is free.
