This is mini-golf with a big message. Domino Park’s Putting Green, a climate change-themed mini golf course recently opened in mid-July. These 18 holes that bring multiple facets of climate change up close and personal were designed by community artists and designers, school groups, environmental advocacy organizations, and public agencies.
The course is located at River Street and North 1st Street and is open to the public seven days a week. Tickets are available on a first-come-first-serve basis; generally admission is $10 for Adults and $5 Children/Seniors — BUT on Wednesdays before 5 p.m. and Saturdays before 1 p.m. admission is $5 for Adults and $2 Children/Seniors. Proceeds from this course will be donated to local nonprofit organizations addressing climate change and resiliency issues in NYC, two of which are: Wildlife Conservation Society and the Newtown Creek Alliance.
The construction of this course also had saving the environment in the forefront. “Two Trees and the golf course designers took several steps to ensure that the most environmentally friendly methods were used to create each hole. For example, when you’re entering the golf course, the globe that you pass was made from recycled plastic bottle caps and scraps of left-over turf. All of the curbing surrounding the holes is also made of 100% recycled tires, and all of the plants in and around the course were selected for their native habitat qualities and to complement the existing self-seeded landscape,” informed the press release.
