Throughout December city clerks were sent out to swear in the new team of NYC Council Members.
January 5 was the first day the New York City Council convened in this new year. Lincoln Restler, the newly elected council member for District 33 stated, “Today was special. My first day voting as a member of NYC Council! Proud that my first vote cast was to elect the first Black Speaker in NYC. The historic election of Adrienne Adams is a great sign of what’s to come in the Council! And love being part of most diverse council ever!”
District 34’s council member, Jennifer Gutierrez had to participate in the meeting virtually from home, as she recently became a mother. On January 3, she said, “It’s my first day on the job as a [council member]! Making this transition while adjusting to motherhood is challenging, but I’m so excited to get to work! Today my staff and I are spending time gearing up for the term.” In a statement posted on January 5 she said, “We’ve got so much work to do — for tenants, for immigrants, for our schools, for workers, for mothers, and for so many of our communities.”
