As part of a broader investment that will bring safer streets, stronger infrastructure, and real improvements in daily life, U.S. Representative Nydia Velázquez presented the Cooper Park Houses Residents Council a check for $1M.

Velázquez said that the funding will provide, “critical security lighting upgrades right here at Cooper Park Houses. This will benefit over 1500 residents across eleven buildings. Strategically installed to increase visibility and serve as a deterrent to crime.  This is about making sure our seniors and our children can walk about throughout the development at night without fear.”

NYC Housing Authority Chief Operating Officer Eva Trimble was present during the check presentation.  In thanking Velázquez, she said, “Whenever NYCHA faces crisis level moments Representative Velasquez is always there asking, ‘How can I help?’ This lighting project is one example of that.”

Debra Benders, president of the Cooper Park Houses Residents Council, is dedicated in obtaining what is needed for her neighbors, the residents of Cooper Park Houses. “Today it’s about more than a check, it’s about being heard.  For years the residents raised their voices about safety, about visibility, and the basic right to feel secure where we live. Congresswoman Velázquez thank you, not just for today but for always standing with us. This investment is more than lighting, it’s about dignity, it’s about equity, and it’s making sure communities like Cooper Park Houses are seen and valued,” Benders said.

Velázquez acknowledged community organizations that offer positive pathways to success that contribute to community safety.  She named St. Nicks Alliance and Southside United HFDC – Los Sures.
