On September 18, New York City Department of Parks & Recreation (NYC Parks) Commissioner Tricia Shimamura and Groundswell Executive Director Yvonne Brathwaite joined artists and community members to celebrate the completion of twelve total murals across the five boroughs. Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani announced this public art project in mid-July around the time of the 2026 World Cup finals, to reveal that the theme of the murals would honor the FIFA World Cup and summer sports.

This initiative was launched in partnership with Groundswell, NYC Parks, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD). Throughout the summer, New Yorkers of all ages were invited to help create the murals through community paint days at each site.

“Murals have the power to tell the stories of our neighborhoods and create a sense of belonging for everyone who visits our parks,” said Shimamura. “It’s been a great summer to be a New Yorker, and these new murals are a culmination of all the energy and community that we experienced during the World Cup. New York City is at its best when we’re outside and together, and this free public art enhances and uplifts the public spaces where we play, celebrate, and connect.”

“Nuestra Bushwick” is North Brooklyn’s contribution to this project. This mural is located at 16 Garden Street, on the Flushing Avenue side of NYC Parks Garden Playground. The artist is Yolande Delius with fabrication assistants Amanda Jones and Madison Williams. The mural acknowledges special thanks to: Grand Street Settlement, Cornerstone Community Center at Bushwick Houses, and the Co-op School Summer Camp.

“Art has a way of bringing people together and making a community feel seen,” said DYCD Commissioner Sandra Escamilla-Davies. “These murals gave communities a chance to celebrate the culture and spirit of their neighborhoods, and at DYCD, we are proud to collaborate with organizations that create spaces for that kind of connection.”
