For several days in a row, a young man was noticed asking for money on a street corner near 790 Broadway. As luck would have it, that is also the St. Nicks Alliance Workforce Development address.  On learning of the situation Beatrice Brown, Program Manager of First Job, St. Nicks Alliance Workforce Development Center, made a point to go out and speak to him to assess his situation.

“He asked for money when I went up to him, and I said, ‘What about if I get you a job?’,” said Beatrice Brown.

“Yes! I really need a job,” Walter Figueroa, aka: the young man, said.

Ms. Brown asked Walter to come in to Workforce Development at 10 a.m. the next day and see her.  “The young man showed up at 8 a.m. the next morning! He waited two hours, and he brought his cousin with him, who also needed a job,” said Beatrice.  She referred them both to Broadway Famous Party Rentals who needed employees for their warehouse. They were both hired.

After working 2 weeks Walter visited Beatrice Brown to show her his first paycheck. He continues to pass by and visit Beatrice Brown regularly at Workforce Development to tell her of his progress at his new job and how happy and grateful he is.

St. Nicks Alliance Workforce Development offers free trainings, info sessions, and adult education programs.  Walk-ins are welcome M–F from 9 a.m.–2 p.m. at 790 Broadway, 2fl., BK, NY 11206 or call: 718.302.2057 ext. 231.
