On November 16th 38 runners registered at the Sumner Community Center. Jonee Billy, the St. Nicks Alliance Cornerstone Director, said, “We partnered with a program called Marathon Kids to further promote our mission of healthy living at Sumner Community Center. The Marathon Kids program is an incentive based; motivational program dedicated to improving the health of children, so that they in turn can live happier, healthier lifestyles.”
Chad Mann, the Manager of Running Clubs and Partnerships for Marathon Kids, tweeted a congratulatory, “Go Coach Jonee!” on hearing of the sign up success.
Ms. Billy explains, “Research has shown that the vast majority of kids don’t get the 60 minutes of physical activity they need each day, which makes them susceptible to a future of health ailments, as well as poorer academic achievements. Each of our Sumner Striders has a goal of completing four marathons (104.8 miles) incrementally over the course of the running club season. Our kids have a variety of abilities – some will run, some will walk a lap at a time, but before you know it they would’ve gone farther than they ever dreamed. So look out for us Williamsburg!”
The Marathon Kids at Sumner Community Center will kick off their running season on December 5th, with the launch/Open House for Sumner Community Center.
