Swinging Sixties Senior Center has hosted a food pantry via NY Common Pantry for the past 14 years. Last October brought the bad news that beginning November 2017 the participants at the Swinging 60’s would have to trek some distance away to an alternate site to receive their monthly food allotment.

This was savage news to those who need the food pantry to fill in a hunger gap just when the weather was turning colder. Many of this food pantry’s clients are elderly. “To ask seniors to walk one mile across busy streets, dodging traffic with shopping carts in tow, is unconscionable,” said John Pelle, Director of Swinging Sixties Senior Center. In the ensuing months, not one of the approximately 80 Swinging Sixties participants was able to collect their food at the other location.

Thanks to Assemblymember Joseph Lentol’s advocacy, NY Common Pantry returned to Swinging Sixties Center on March 20th! On the food pantry’s next visit, April 19th, Assemblyman Lentol arrived via the Swinging Sixties bus to check in on the seniors.
