Santa Arrives on Graham Avenue in Retro Style

Santa and his helpers bring a 1958 vintage MTA bus to Graham Avenue shoppers. (l to r) Bruce Lewis (NYC Transit), Betty Cooney (Graham BID), Santa, Carmelita Sanford (NYC Transit), Gabriel Berrios (Elf), Darryl Walters (NYC Transit), Blanca Ramos (NYC Transit), and Jack Jablonski (NYC Transit)

Each Christmas the Graham Avenue BID shuttles in Santa on an MTA vintage bus so the local shoppers can have a unique photo op with Santa. This year there were two weekends with Santa, and sometimes the vintage bus was more of a draw than the jolly old elf.  On December 15, Santa arrived on an MTA bus circa 1962 and on December 22 Santa sat pretty in a two-tone green with a red stripe 1958 vintage bus. You would think the bus was painted especially for Christmas, but this is how it actually was during its operation (from 1958 to 1972).  Both weekends brought nearly a thousand visitors. Santa gave out candy canes and NYC Transit staff gave out an MTA gift bag, which had a bus piggy bank among other child friendly gifts.  Even though it will be another year until Santa visits again, the shops on Graham Avenue welcome shoppers the whole year through.
