GrowNYC’s McCarren farmers market is a year-round market, but the winter chill can persuade even the most diehard farmers market goer to stay home and stay cozy. To encourage more winter participation at the market, GrowNYC started a Greenmarket Winter Warrior contest in which you visit the GrowNYC info table in any of their farmers markets and are given a card that will be punched for each visit to that market. Once your card is punched ten times you can pick a prize in addition to being entered into a raffle for a bigger prize. No insight as to what the prizes will be this year; in past years prizes for the ten participation punches have been shopping bags, water bottles, etc., but some see the real prize as being the rush of endorphins received from trudging out into the cold and supporting farmers during the hardest months of the year. This year’s contest started January 8 and concludes on March 26, 2022.
Honey, goat cheese, apple cider, fish, bread and baked goods, milk and dairy, hydroponic greens, eggs, beef, chicken, turkey, pork, duck, mushrooms, pickles, kimchee, apples, root vegetables, and more are all available at the farmers market during winter. Also the GrowNYC Grains grainstand visits the market every third Saturday of the month to sell whole grains, flour, and pasta through the winter.
