On June 16, Mayor Zohran Mamdani held a Juneteenth reception at Gracie Mansion.  When it was time for him to speak, he first mentioned Dr. Lorenzo Pace, a creative force who has made a foothold in North Brooklyn.

“I want to say thank you to the incredible artists, activists, and community leaders that are with us today, and I’d like to begin with acknowledging Dr. Pace. Because your sculpture, Triumph of the Human Spirit, in Foley Square has become a rallying point for so many who dared to imagine a better future. It is a powerful tribute to those long forgotten who lay buried nearby,” said Mamdani

In addition to being an artist, Pace is a master storyteller and performance artist, and lecturer. His Triumph of the Human Spirit is a five-story, 300-ton, black-granite sculpture that is the world’s largest site-specific installation dedicated to the discourse of African enslavement and human freedom.
