Youth Creativity on Display at Amant

In 2024, a literal beautiful friendship began between Amant and St. Nicks Alliance’s youth and education team. Corinne Santiago, arts education manager for St. Nicks Alliance, partnered with Amant’s curator, Patricia Margarita Hernández and the North Brooklyn Showcase was born.

Amant established itself at 315 Maujer Street in 2019.  It is a center for contemporary art, free to the public, that fosters artistic research, experimentation, and dialogue through exhibitions, live programs, publications, and artist residencies.

St. Nicks Alliance’s teaching artists guided students from 23 area schools to explore their creativity through various disciplines that fit this year’s theme: Be the Change.

The students presented their efforts on the evening of June 3, which covered categories in dance, music, theatre, visual art, and the culinary arts. It was a feast for all senses, pottery and screen-printed t-shirts were among the tangible sights to be seen and held. A drum line and a guitar ensemble were joys to be heard.

“Showcasing student artwork at Amant has become a cherished annual tradition. Art and creative expression are essential to transformative work, fostering critical thinking, cultivating imagination, and affirming the creative voice within every student,” said Santiago.

This program was made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
