Carolina Hidalgo, MS 50’s native language arts teacher, raises a debate question on voting. Council Member Antonio Reynoso was the debate’s guest moderator.

Two schools 1460 miles apart conducted a debate in Spanish. Native Spanish speaking students at MS 50 debated students of the International School of Sosua in the Dominican Republic. This exercise, moderated by Council Member Antonio Reynoso, helps the MS 50 students better their Spanish fluency, according to their teacher, Carolina Hidalgo. Google Hangout was the virtual bridge that brought these two schools together to engage in a debate without borders and hold an exchange of ideas on the merits of compulsory voting.

In 2016, MS 50 founded the first ever Spanish language middle school debate team in the city and went on to become citywide champions the past two years. In addition, the school was selected as a Showcase School by the DOE Chancellor Fariña in which MS 50’s debate program was highlighted.
