High schoolers who signed up for in-person learning for the 2021–2022 school year have yet to get much classroom time. The school year started on October 1st only to go to fully remote on November 19. Students who signed up for on-site classes were allowed to return to their seats on March 22.
“High school reopening creates much-needed opportunities for students who opt into the hybrid model to reconnect with peers and adults. However, challenges related to safety, staffing and two models of education are also reintroduced. St. Nicks Alliance staff who are located in five local high schools are here to provide full support, programs and services during this time of transition,” Debra Sue Lorenzen, director of St. Nicks Alliance Youth & Education.
COVID-19 has been a teacher in and of itself on pretty much every level of human existence. Some students excel in in-person learning some do better remote. However, the loss of socialization has taken its toll on both types of students.
“I’m happy to go back. I think we all need to get back on track. I think one of the points of school is teaching perseverance; to get up early, take a walk, and socialize. We didn’t have any of that for a whole year, so I’m thankful.” – Christopher Bickel, Williamsburg High School of Arts and Technology Freshman.
Even though high schools have opened their doors for on-site learning some students have chosen to stay in remote learning.
“I’m a little concerned about it since Corona cases are still kind of high. I’ll be remote either way, but I hope everyone else will be okay,” Priscilla Lei, Williamsburg High School of Arts and Technology Senior.
